Session Description: Understanding how ticks transmit various pathogens to the mammalian host is critical in understanding disease prevention and approaches to diagnosis of infection. Veterinarians play a vital role in protection of people and pets from exposure to tick-borne pathogens because most of these pathogens that infect dogs can also infect pet owners and veterinarians can easily test pets for exposure to tick-borne pathogens making dogs and dogs are known to be excellent sentinels for human exposure. This presentation discusses the mechanisms by which ticks transmit disease causing pathogens, how veterinarians can protect people and pets from acquiring these infections, how to recognize tick-borne disease and the risk veterinarians and veterinary health care workers may encounter by having high exposure to these vectors and the pathogens they carry.
