Synopsis
Aretha Franklin, a musician whose songs combined themes of feminism, religion, the civil rights movement, and the struggles of being an African American woman in the 1960s and 1970s, died last week at the age of 76. She spelled out the word “respect” in her most famous song, saying that’s all she was asking from her man when he got home. Her music appealed to black and white audiences at a time when radio was heavily segregated.
