Most Of Us Clueless About Food Expiration Labels

Synopsis

Vidcast:  https://youtu.be/4O8J48ETm0U   Fifty-four percent of us have no idea what the label “BEST if used by” means and a whopping 76% don’t know the specific safety impact of the “USE by” label.  George Washington University and Johns Hopkins researchers studied the responses of 2,607 subjects confronted with common food labels.   “Best if used by” lists a date after which the taste, look, and smell of a given food will be less than satisfying.  The more important “Use by” date is used for a smaller number of foods including deli meats, soft cheeses, and prepared foods and is the date after which contaminating bacteria such as listeria and molds might be present.   https://www.jneb.org/article/S1499-4046(21)00091-9/fulltext   #foodlabelling #expiration #date #contamination #flavor
