The Shutdown Podcast

This week, the ShutDown crew briefly recaps the Padres pathetic series loss to the Marlins to start the homestead and the drafting CJ Abrams with the #6 overall pick! (12:24) They focus the remainder of the show on a variety of cultural flashpoint affecting the sports landscape. This includes 8 "Co-Winners "of the National Spelling Bee (what?)(17:49), Hank Haney correctly predicting the winner of the US Woman’s Open (and getting suspended for being insensitive)(24:14), NBA Players wanting the term “owner” banned (35:15), and how we as a society need to band together to stop the madness! The pod ends on a lighter note with NBA Finals Game 3 preview and predictions for the week.

This week, the gents return from Memorial Day Holiday to discuss the Gulls concluding a positive season (0:55) and the Padres recent 6-3 swing, debating positives and negatives. (2:37) After previewing the NBA Finals(24:00), they end by debating the Mount Rushmore of San Diego State athletes(35:13) (Tony Gwynn. Marshall Faulk, Kawhi Leonard, and Stephen Strasburg) and previewing the ShutDown Carbs Challenge for June. (42:37)

The ShutDown gents begin this week by shouting out the San Diego Gulls on their success in the AHL Playoffs. Afterwards, they break down the fall out of the Ian Kinsler F-U snafu, surmising that he still stinks and needs to perform better to win the hearts and minds of Padres fans. After profiling the many shortcomings leading to a 1-5 week, the pod ends with analysis of Magic Johnson declaring nuclear war on the Lakers, adding to their dumpster fire offseason.

A Game of Thrones extravaganza! It’s the final time the ShutDown crew gets to discuss the HBO phenomenal and they went all-in! After recapping predictions and this week’s final Episode “The Iron Throne,”  a dive into the disaster of Bran becoming King of Westeros lights the “Dracarys” fire of Chuck and Rob. They analyze the final arcs of Dany, Jon, Tyrion, Arya, Sansa and the beloved characters of Game of Thrones canon before declaring winners and losers. The pod ends with how Chuck would save Game of Thrones when HBO inevitably reboots the show, as well as final thoughts/impressions/thanks on a truly memorable and inspiring series.

In our second to last Odd Pod devoted to Game of Thrones, we focus on ten burning (get it!) questions on the series. After discussing “The Bells” ranking as most shocking episode (1:25), we discuss Dany turning Mad Queen (6:15), Jon Snow (14:00), Drogon (18:10), Jamie versus Euron (22:47) before his deathly reunion with Cersei (26:29). After celebrating Clegane Bowl (33:31) and highlighting the perilous path of Arya Stark (37:00), we end with a discussion of burning questions that need to be resolved in the series finale (40:05), worst possible outcomes of series…Please God does Bran not win! (56:54), and who we think wins the Iron Throne.

In a lively discussion full of spirit of vigor, the ShutDown gents evaluate Andy Green’s tenure as Padres skipper (1:40) and what he needs to do to keep his gig past this season. After recapping the Padres week (20:47) and previewing Paddack versus Kershaw at Dodger Stadium (27:31), they end with a thoughtful summation of the NBA Playoffs (31:42), Kawhi’s amazing game winner against Philly (38:07), and the NBA Draft Lottery and its effect on the league landscape (41:00).

In this week’s pod, Chris Paddack captures center stage (0:46) as they chronicle the recent national captivating duel against Jacob DeGrom, Pete Alonso, and the New York Mets (1:44). The boys get to discuss the NFL, Padres baseball, and Game of Thrones. What’s not to love? After debuting a new solid intro song for the pod, they dive right into the NFL draft (1:42), focusing on 1st round pick Jerry Tillery (3:56). They shift into rounds 2-5 before profiling the ShutDown Stud of the Week, San Diego State Tight End Kahale Warring (18:30). After enjoying the misery of Giants fans react to the drafting of Quarterback Daniel Jones (22:38), they discuss the aftermath of the Fernando Tatis Jr. hamstring injury (26:44) and assessing the Padres first month of the season (39:20). The pod ends with a brief analysis of Game of Thrones The Long Night / Battle of Winterfell before entering this week’s predictions.

In a special odd pod, the ShutDown Studs return to the World of Westeros. They break down Winterfell (4:25) and Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (12:09). After discussing favorite scenes, reunions, and memories evoked from the pilot episode, they turn to who’s most likely to perish in the upcoming bloodbath at the Battle of Winterfell (24:10). 

The SD boys return for another weekly podcast full of impressive banter. Chuck starts (5:50) by amplifying his frustration with the past week of abysmal Padres baseball (along with shameless plugs for his weekly column). After Rob adds on to the carnage of Padres critiques, they turn to the phenomenal play of ShutDown Stud of the Week Fernando Tatis Jr. and Kirby Yates (32:41). They then turn to a thoughtful and insightful discussion of the Kate Smith controversy (37:20), play the song that will may disappear from the marketplace (38:29), and evaluate its impact on future censorship in American sports and culture.

ShutDown Sports returns with a fun-filled podcast with Game of Thrones-level excitement. They start by analyzing Tiger Woods amazing return to glory by winning the Masters (3:07). After recapping the Padres recent road trip (14:19), they focus on areas where the team must improve (i.e. most areas). Then Chuck gets back at Bob Brenly for his idiotic “bike chain” comments (27:33) regarding Fernando Tatis’s necklace somehow “slowing him down.” Mackenzie Gore earns the coveted ShutDown Stud of the Week (34:30) after a tremendous opening week in Lake Elsinore. The gents end the week by discussing the awfulness of Ozzie Albies’s extension with the Braves (38:50), the Chargers full commitment to Powder Blue uniforms (44:35) and fan mail from the Game of Thrones Odd Pod (49:10).

It’s finally here…the FIRST ShutDown Odd Pod. First topic of choice is a passion of the ShutDown Hosts: Game of Thrones. The behemoth epic tale of HBO returns this Sunday. They immediately delve deep into a variety of fun topics leading up to the final season. These include a brief summation of the show, their favorite (and worst) characters, odds on who will win the throne, odds who will die first, and the key episodes to watch before this Sunday. The pod ends by asking what key unanswered questions must get resolved before coming to a close. A fun show that embraces the innate fun of being deeply hooked on a truly memorable show.

After an eager tease of their first Odd Pod on Game of Thrones, the Guys recap the past week in San Diego sports. After a profile of their ShutDown Stud Luis Urias (making his Padres debut tonight), they highlight the past series win against the Cardinals. They evaluate  “Stock Up, Stock Down” performers of the Padres (Hooray! Machado, Hosmer, Tatis Jr., Lucchesi, Strahm; Boo! Robert Stock) and other exciting happenings across MLB. They end by previewing the first round of the NBA Playoffs because their own teams suck and San Diego fans watch the NBA too.

The Padres season is underway and they are winning (Except when Chuck attends!). This week, the guys breakdown the destruction of the AAF as a league and the implications on San Diego Fleet fans. After profiling ShutDown Stud of the Week Xavier Edwards, they recap the first week of the Padres season, including impressive starts from Lauer, Lucchesi, and Paddack. Following a brief preview of the upcoming road trip (10 games!), Chuck profiles his two in-person visits to Petco Park, including cool changes (WIFI in the whole stadium) and his embrace of high calorie foods and beers.

The Padres 2019 Season has arrived! After Rob humble brags about dominating the NCAA Bracket Challenge on opening weekend (97 percentile…wth!), the gents jump right into the most exciting Opening Day in many years. They breakdown the starting lineup (TATIS MADE THE TEAM!!!), the main pitching rotation, and other important parts of the team. After indulging Chuck’s degenerate gambling futures bets on Padres wins and MVP/Rookie of the Year Odds, they answer fan emails and briefly highlight the best eateries at Petco Park.

This week's podcast begins with an obituary to the college basketball season for SDSU and USD. Following a brief recap of the Fleet and a debate over Mike Trout's record contract, the gents discuss the potential starting rotation for the Padres (including a head to head prediction match up). After Chuck shares a few of his adventures in Bean Town, the pod ends with analysis on how San Diego can emulate the sports culture in Boston (hint...winning helps).

This week, the guys break down the HUGE scandal that has engulfed several prestige colleges (Yale, UT Austin, USD!), Aunt Becky from Full (Fuller?) House, and Felicity Huffman, now a desperately scared former Housewife. They next debate why the heck Daylight Savings Time still exists (it shouldn't). After recapping the Fleet, Toreros, Aztecs, and Padres, they end by previewing Chuck's upcoming trip to Boston. Maybe he can bring back some of the winning culture free-flowing in that city's Golden Age of Sports.

This week, Chuck and Rob start by discussing if taxes played a role in Bryce Harper choosing Philly over LA and why Machado didn't care. Then, the focus shifts to ranking the level of excitement Padres have on this year's team compared to prior teams (1998. 2004, 2007-08, 2015). After recapping Spring Training action, the boys shift gears to the Fleet and asking the tough question: why should we continue to care? The pod concludes with a recap of the Shout Out Stud of the Week (Landon Donovan) and a summary of local college basketball and a realization that they may not be the best prognosticators (yet make future predictions anyways).

In this week's podcast, Chuck and Rob deep dive on the Machado contract details along with other highlights from Padres Spring Training. They then profile the "ShutDown Shoutout Stud of the Week" Chris Paddack and important NL West events. After Chuck chronicles the adventures of watching his nephew navigate among other 4-5 year olds at his first soccer match, they end with a recap of the SD Fleet, Aztecs, and Toreros before making a final prediction of the week.
