Bridget Taylor is a Senior Specialist Nurse in the community palliative care team at Sir Michael Sobell House hospice in Oxford (UK). In addition to her clinical work, Bridget has been a senior lecturer at Oxford Brookes University for over 20 years, teaching a variety of courses on sexuality, end of life care and research methods. Her doctoral research explored the experiences of sexuality and intimacy for patients and partners of patients living with a life-limiting illness. Bridget has published extensively and her co-authored Extended PLISSIT model for addressing sexual well-being has been widely adopted. During this episode, Dr. Black speaks about the content from her webinar presentation, Progressive Mobility and Pressure Injury: What’s The Link? Progressive mobility is the graded application of positioning and mobility techniques to return patients to prior levels of function. With critical or prolonged illness, recovery of function is slow and increases the duration of risk for pressure injury. This webinar addressed pressure injury prevention, at all levels of progressive mobility, and the ergonomic issues for nurses with these patients. Introducing the New Foot and Nail Section of JWOCN (EP.16)
07/05/2019 Duration: 24minOn this episode of WOCTalk, we sit down with Tara Beuscher, DNP, RN-BC, GCNS-BC, ANP-BC, CWOCN, CFCN, NEA-BC. Dr. Beuscher has been providing foot and nail care for over 25 years. Beginning foot care practice in Senior Centers and Skilled Nursing Facilities, she developed the Foot and Nail Course for Nurses in 1996, which has been the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire’s highest-ranking continuing education course since its inception. Dr. Beuscher was on the initial Foot and Nail Care Nurse Exam test development committee with the Wound, Ostomy Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB®). She currently works in the podiatry department for Doctors Making House Calls, a home-based multispecialty practice providing care in homes, independent and assisted living facilities though out North Carolina. She is a very active volunteer leader of the WOCN® Society, functioning as the Lead Nurse Planner for the Society and the Foot Care section editor, a new addition to the Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence

Pouching Made Easy: Creating an Essential Ostomy Tote for Emergency Room Nurses (EP.14)
09/04/2019 Duration: 22minOver 100,000 ostomy surgeries are performed in the United States each year, and this number continues to grow. Research has shown that 70% of patients experience postoperative complications, resulting in increased length of stay and higher readmission rates. Ostomates face multiple challenges post-surgery related to leakage, prolapse, herniation, retractions, and necrosis, which can lead to an emergency department (ED) visit. Setting the Standard for Body Worn Absorbent Products: Results of the WOCN Consensus Conference (EP.07)
01/01/2019 Duration: 41minWOC Nurses are often called upon to make recommendations to individuals or purchasing/procurement representatives regarding body worn absorbent products. While considered a containment strategy for incontinence, these products simultaneously impact skin integrity. The WOCN Society held a consensus conference to identify current clinical practice gaps and define standards of care for individuals using body worn absorbent products for the management of fecal and urinary incontinence. The goal of the consensus conference was to develop evidence and consensus based statements that result in the development of a manuscript and ultimately, an evidence-and-consensus-based decision support tool around this concept. Development of a Patient Peristomal Skin Assessment Guide (EP.02)
23/10/2018 Duration: 23minThe incidence of peristomal skin complications (PSCs) is reported to be as high as 77%, and the negative impact of PSCs on patient quality of life is well documented. In addition, studies show that the majority of patients fail to recognize PSCs, believing that skin issues are "normal", and only 20% seek treatment. This data emphasizes the need for consumer-based tools that educate individuals with ostomies about strategies for maintaining skin health and that assist the person with an ostomy to promptly identify PSCs.
