Jesus goes against this norm and says that unity among his followers points the world to God himself. #WeekendsAtKensington Matthew was not liked – not liked at all. Tax collectors enriched themselves by praying on impoverished people, stifling trade and operating as what amounted to a local mafia. To make matters worse, they were despised for collaborating with the foreign power that had subjected their own people to bondage. Can you imagine what the other disciples thought when Jesus approached them and said, “Hey, this is Matthew. I’m sure you know him as the tax collector. He’s going to be joining us.” I’m sure there were some concerns. So, when it comes to God picking his team, does your past choices, lifestyle or even beliefs disqualify you? He was not only wracked with guilt and fear, but he also had developed a speech impediment. He was ridiculously unqualified. And yet, God saw something in Moses that no one else saw. God saw the man that was going to lead an entire nation out of slavery and into freedom. Moses saw his failures and weaknesses as things that disqualified him from serving God, and yet God saw his background and weaknesses as part of Moses’ preparation to be one of the greatest leaders in human history. No matter how much you loved your family, you experienced part of their brokenness and experienced brokenness yourself. The temptation for us is to either hold God’s standard for family or diminish it to match our current reality. It’s easy to adjust the standard to make us feel better about our relationship with our spouse, our kids, our in-laws, and our own parents. Why does our mind (intellect) lose to our heart (experience) so often? How often has our knowledge about God been contradicted by our experience with God? For many people, there is a strong separation between the two, and it has led to struggles and frustrations… What if it was never meant to be that way? What if there is a way to fix this? In Peter's journey of following Jesus, we see evidence of a man whose heart and mind were at war with each other. Peter had incredible moments in which he stated beautiful nuggets of wisdom and insight, but yet his actions oftentimes contradicted his words.

Then everything changes! Every single person is breathless and awestruck: Jesus is alive again! This spectacular reversal is the best news anyone could ever hear. The people rejoice: He is alive! He is victorious over sin and death! Suddenly, they squirm a little…isn’t this the most intense, personal love imaginable? In a sudden reversal, the people’s affection grows cold. Jesus, hailed as the Messiah just days before, is sentenced to death by the religious elite, the people themselves, and the Roman rulers. He endures agony beyond imagination and dies like a criminal on the cross. His followers don’t understand that his death is not the end.
