Star Wars: Delusions Of Granular

It's the moment we've been waiting for! Star Wars Episode VII has a title! Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the title of the next film in the franchise. Do we like it? Do we hate it? What does it mean? Can we read any hints of the plot from these three words? Does this mean that Star Wars movies are moving forward without episode numbers? All of this and more is discussed when Ron and Jp dive into the first real news to come out for the new movie since the cast was announced!

Jp and Ron pull out their 12-sided dice and Krull VHS tapes to talk about the rise of the science fiction and fantasy subculture of the 1970s. As we explore this era, we talk about how some of the geekier interests of the time might have led to or at least helped contribute to the success of Star Wars. Did Lucas write Star Wars knowing that there was a growing audience for this kind of subject matter or was he just at the right place during the right time? Music, video games, movies and novels...it seems like everything was becoming a little more geeky as people were looking for escapism from the harsher realities of the 70s. We also talk about how this culture's popularity started to wane by the early 80s with subpar imitators and ripoffs. Are we coming up on another renaissance of geek culture with the release of Episode VII next year or did it never go away? Join us as we dive into the granularity of the 70s!

Some people call him a space cowboy, some people call him a joker but we call him Mark Hamill. Join us as we discuss his career outside of the Star Wars saga. From his early start on TV and in movies such as Corvette Summer to his prolific career as a voice over talent. We try to stay on track with this actor even when he zigged where others have zagged. Jp and Ron take a break from the usual shows to discuss the latest leaks from Star Wars Episode VII. This time around a lot of descriptions of concept art are posted on the rumor sites. Are these all to be believed or are they just ideas that were thrown out a long time ago? Only J.J. and the Star Wars crew know the truth. Also, how powerful is Disney? Jp and Ron jump into the first of the new canonical Star Wars content (forgetting about The Sons of Dathomir) with a look at the novel, Star Wars: A New Dawn as well as the premiere of Star Wars Rebels, Spark of Rebellion. Although we are in pretty much agreement with the book, we end up having a lively discussion about show. Mildly stated, we have some pretty mixed feelings about Rebels so far. We'll let you know what we think is good and what we think is a giant misstep for the start of the series. Hint: it rhymes with "cookies."

For the first time in SWDOG history, Jp and Ron embark on a special two-part episode exploring the fascinating character of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. In this episode we talk about the inception of Darth Vader into the Star Wars films. We discuss the inspiration for the character as well as some other little known facts about this iconic figure. Although we approach this subject from different ends of the spectrum, I think we reach a consensus by the end. And that is: they could make a helluva R-rated Star Wars movie out of the subject matter already introduced in the Saga!

Jp and Ron discuss the history of stunt casting big name actors in Star Wars. The facts may surprise you! Also we offer up our picks for actors that should stay far away from any Star Wars movies in the future. We're talking to you, Clooney!

Our hopes, dreams and desires for the Star Wars saga in the years to come. Disney wants to release multiple Star Wars movies each year. Does this mean Star Wars going to follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe model or are they going to handle this franchise differently? When do they run out of ideas? And more importantly, when do the fans get tired of Star Wars? Will there ever be an entire reboot? Jp and Ron speculate on all of these questions and more!

Don't call them "robots!" Jp and Ron talk about our mechanical friends (and enemies) in the Star Wars universe. What makes R2-D2 and C-3PO so lovable? What was George Lucas's inspiration? We try to uncover the history of droids throughout cinema and more. We also talk about how droids fit into Star Wars. Are they companions, slaves or appliances. Many people treat droids differently during the saga. Or is it that the Skywalkers are the only ones that give droids more respect than anyone else? Listen in as we try to figure it all out!

We started off this episode going in one direction but end up getting sidetracked by all the Episode VII rumors that seemed to hit the Internet all at once. Are they true or just a part of Disney and J.J. Abrams's plan to throw fans off the scent of what's really going on? We don't have the answers but that doesn't stop us from doing what we do best: speculating! Join us as we try to make sense of it all. Along the way we probably go off on a few tangents as well. We tend to do that. 

Ron and Jp try to figure out what the force is. When George Lucas introduced the world to the Force, we just accepted it. Since then the Force as evolved into many things. We discuss the many different way that it is defined both within the Original Trilogy and the Prequels as well as in the E.U. and The Clone Wars.

Ron and Jp try to list all of the behind-the-scenes people who have had a hand in shaping the Star Wars saga. We all know that George Lucas created the universe but who else was key to bringing the world to life in the early days? Who was responsible for the Prequels turning out the way they did? And moving forward without Lucas, who are the real power players at Disney and Lucasfilm? 

Jp and Ron take some time to look back on the E.U. as it becomes Legends. We both have read a little bit here and a little bit there so together we put our combined experiences with the E.U. together to try to figure out if the entire, somewhat continuous story that took place during the "dark times" was really worth it. 

Jp and Ron discuss the positive side of the Prequels. Once we get past the hangups that everyone has with the Prequels we are able to have a serious discussion about the themes, plot and intentions George Lucas had with these movies. We suggest that people should let go of their hatred and except the Prequels for what they are. 

Jp and Ron discuss The Clone Wars series. Although reluctant at first to jump into this series, we finally embrace it for everything that it's worth. Does this show restore faith in Star Wars? You bet it does! Listen to us talk about why this why The Clone Wars must be required viewing for all Star Wars fans.

Ron and Jp share their love for Star Wars and their memories of seeing Star Wars for the first time. Because Ron is a generation one fan and Jp, a generation two fan their entry points may be different but they share the same feelings about the entire saga.
