  • Aubrey de Grey - How To Live Forever

    15/03/2015 Duration: 01h25min

Aubrey de Grey is a true frontiersman, daring to push out against what seems the most natural and unstoppable forces of nature - ageing. He’s not just another voice though, he’s a scientist and identifies ageing as a disease, one that can be cured with the right medicine. His work calls for serious scientific exploration of what causes tissue to age and to then find solutions to those components - what he calls the roadmap to defeat biological ageing. In fact, he believes that the first humans who will live to be 1,000 years old are already alive today! Ageing, and indeed death, are some of the most colossal challenges to humanity biologically and philosophically. De Grey himself, of course, has caused plenty of controversy with his views. Despite, however, a $20,000 prize to disprove the worthiness of de Grey’s studies (put up by himself and MIT and de Grey’s own foundation) his work still stands, capturing the imagination of molecular biologists and the public alike. We’re excited this week to welcome him t

  • Matthew Pritchard - Dirty Sanchez

    22/02/2015 Duration: 01h47min

Matthew Pritchard is one of the founders and faces of Dirty Sanchez, a daredevil show where members of the Sanchez gang would compete and out do one another in serious and risky pranks and stunts - not unlike the infamous American show Jackass. There really wasn’t a limit to what the Sanchez boys would do. Reaching national fame extremely quickly resulted in a spiralling push in crazier stunts and erratic behaviour, even off-camera. A keen skateboarder from the age of 15, Matthew and Dirty Sanchez co-founder Lee Dainton first got together to record bootleg skating videos which often featured pranks. This formed a basis for what would become the TV show, launched by MTV. In a time when there were other shows pushing accepted boundaries one critic said of Dirty Sanchez, “…they make Jackass look like the Royal Shakespeare Company”. While the Sanchez boys have in fact always enjoyed a good relationship with Jackass, this success pushed them for four seasons, spin offs and a movie deal. It was the rockstar life to

  • Nathalie Nahai - Web Psychologist

    01/02/2015 Duration: 01h10min

Recently a photograph collection circulated called ‘The Death of Conversation’. It was a series of black and whites taken of unknowing members of the public who, in social situations, had abandoned conversation in favour of looking at their mobile phones. It went viral and ended up featured in TIME magazine and the New York Times. The most fascinating thing about the photographs is that they show an outsiders perspective of a habit that we all participate in. On many an occasion we opt for the spikes of thrill we can find on opening social media notifications, receiving likes or being retweeted. Social media access follows us around now with our mobile phones, but it’s no accident that we experience psychological reward using these apps. Nathalie Nahai is a web psychologist. An expert exploring just how the design of the web manipulates and heightens our sense of reward. Her book, Webs of Influence, explores just how technology is strategically created with us in mind - to make us click. Want to know why you

    26/01/2015 Duration: 09min

Meditation is fast becoming a mainstream practice. For a long time it was the mystic discipline of Buddhist monks, the religious and western hippies. These days, however, you’re as likely to find a professional businessman or sportsperson taking time out to find ‘focus’ and be ‘mindful’.  It’s not about finding an ecstatic nirvana and bliss as much as nurturing a sense of self or direction, becoming mindful and seeking calm in this manic technological age of ours. Science backs the practice up, meditation will increase your clarity of thought, lower your stress levels and help you manage the madness. Brian is a big advocate of meditation. Today, he’s sharing some of his top tips on stepping back, self-knowledge and finding some stillness.

  • Steven Pinker - Too Much Morality REDUX

    18/01/2015 Duration: 01h27min

Only this weekend Mr Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, announced in his new book club ‘A Year of Books’ that he’d be taking on Stephen Pinker’s ‘The Better Angel’s of Our Nature’. Within hours, the book catapulted on Amazon’s chart from 6,521st to 501st. A timely coincidence for our scheduled REDUX of LondonReal’s 2013 interview with the linguistic and cognitive scientist - there is a real exciting sense that what we in the LondonReal community have known about Pinker for some time will now be known widely. With the rise to prominence of the Islamic State, Boko Haram and events in Paris, Pinker’s message has never been as relevant. We could be mistaken for believing the world is getting darker again but contrary to what seems to be the trend Pinker argues that violence is actually on the decrease. A revolutionary idea in our media driven world where it seems impossible to escape atrocity. He discusses how archaic structures of morality and thinking have been perpetuating conflict, rather than prev
