Sports history and the modern reality of the current anti-trans legislation fight collide in a state where women's sport mattered for decades before Title IX. Since 1920, girl's high school athletics was administered by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The IGHSAU is recognized as one of the oldest confederations dedicated to opening doors in sports for girls in the world. It began with its well-known, and well-attended annual state girls high school basketball tournament, but it grew over the decades to build a full slate of competition for Iowa girls pre-dating the passage of Title IX “I take a lot of pride that every girl walks down every main street in every town in Iowa just as tall as the boy.” -- IGHSAU executive secretary/legend E. Wayne Cooley Jr., 2002 In 2014, IGHSAU was among the first states in the USA to form policy for the inclusion of transgender girls into high school sport. Again, Iowa leading the way. The swim saga reached the first postseason test. The Ivy League Championship featuring a rare first. Two out transgender student-athletes competing...and in one race competing against each other. Penn's Lia Thomas and Yale's Iszac Henig both chased and caught some dreams in a great weekend at Harvard, but both are also catching flak from those who'd rather exclude them from competition. Alejandra Caraballo, trans right lawyers and Clinical Instructor at Harvard Law School's Cyberlaw Clinic, took a break from legal briefs to take in the championship and cheer for two champs. Karleigh Webb beams her up and gets her impression on the competition and the controversy surrounding their participation. The Ivy League Swimming and Division Championships open Wednesday on the campus of Harvard University, and Penn's Lia Thomas will be there... to compete. Looming in the background is what happens in regard to her eligibility for the NCAA championship meet in March. The new NCAA policy is a derivative of the International Olympic Committee guidelines that will go into effect in March. Yet question remains in regards to why the NCAA took this step, what it could mean, and will it need to be fixed. This week, Karleigh Webb sits down with three guests each seeing the issues and questions from different vantage points. University of Colorado professor Roger Pielke Jr. is an expert in the study of sports governance and look at both the NCAA and IOC frameworks and looks at where they could work and what the sore spots could be. Maxwell Nagle is young promising journalist covering the his favorite game. He's a high school basketball writer for Novahoops.com, based one of the nation's basketball hotbeds, the DMV (District of Columbia-Maryland-Virginia) But he's only a few years remove from his time as a three-point bombardier at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. As Nagle was helping Hollins through the difficult Old Dominion Athletic Conference, he was also working through finding his place as a transgender man on the court and off, while playing ball at an all-women university. The examination led to a choice entering senior year between love for self and a love for the game.
