88.9 Wsnd-fm: The Sound Of Notre Dame

Performed by South Bend-area high school students and directed by two Film, Television, and Theater students at the University of Notre Dame. WSND-FM is proud to present this live recording of their performance of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado," which took place on October 3rd, 2010, in 140 DeBartolo Hall on the campus of Notre Dame. It was presented in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts' "Big Read Program," the University of Notre Dame, and St. Joseph County Public Libraries.

Episode 6 of WSND News, originally broadcast on December 3, 2009, features John Fetterman, mayor of Braddock, Pa., and nicknamed "The Mayor of Hell" for his work in stabilizing a town that has seen the iron industry leave and take with it jobs and a way of life. We also talk to Madeline Buckley, news editor for The [Notre Dame-Saint Mary's College] Observer, about their multi-part series about the 10 Notre Dame students suspended for protesting during the height of the Vietnam War and campus activism today. Plus, a special word from station manager Patrick Brown. This is the final broadcast of WSND News for the Fall 2009 semester.

Inspired by the words of Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to the US last year, the Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Culture focused its annual conference on "The Summons of Freedom: Virtue, Sacrifice, and the Common Good." In Episode 5, WSND News features some of the speakers from the conference, including Michael Novak, Rick Garnett, Alice von Hildebrand, and Frank Beckwith, and talks to them about a wide array of topics.

In honor of all those who served, WSND-FM offers a special tribute, originally broadcast at 11:00 a.m. on November 11, 2009, to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country by reading "In Flanders Fields," by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McRae, and playing Taps.Information about the poem "In Flanders Fields" and its relation to the Veterans Day holiday can be found on the Web site of Arlington National Cemetery. In Episode 4, originally broadcast on November 5, 2009, WSND talks to Neil McFarquhar, UN Bureau Chief for The New York Times, and Fr. John Weiss about their recently-released books about the Middle East and the Catholic Church and homosexuality, respectively. Also, a closer look at the John C. Reilly Center and its recent conference "Darwin in the 21st Century."

WSND News Episode 3, originally broadcast on October 29, 2009, features a talk with Xiao Qiang, adjunct professor of journalism at the University of California-Berkeley about the power of the Internet in China. We also hear from Notre Dame Women's Basketball Head Coach Muffet McGraw about her hopes for the 2009-2010 season.

A special edition of WSND News (Episode 2.5) previews the upcoming Reilly Center conference on "Darwin in the 21st Century." Originally broadcast on October 30, a more in-depth interview will be featured on our WSND News broadcast next Thursday.

Episode 2 of WSND News (originally broadcast on October 15, 2009) focuses on the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and includes interviews with Dr. Horst Teltschik, former national security adviser under German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, as well as former U.S. Ambassador J.D. Bindenagel, who served on the ambassadorial staff to three Germanies - East West, and United. Together, they talk about their memories of the night the border was opened and what the fall of the wall means for the European people.
