  • Legends Podcast #660; Barbie (2023)

    24/01/2024 Duration: 01h13min

The cinematic cultural phenomenon known only as Barbenheimer roller-bladed into theaters last summer with the force of an atomic explosion. The double-feature from those ingenues of cinema verite, Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan, promised to be the box office event of the summer, along with all the meme culture meets pop culture cachet that came with it. While both films performed well, the former won the battle, with the long-gestating film based on Mattel’s bestselling doll bringing in over a billion dollars at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023. With Margot Robbie in the title role leading an all-star cast, including Ryan Gosling as Ken, the pink-drenched flick’s production department caused a national paint shortage of its signature hue. Now we’re just three hosts living in a Barbie world, having an existential crisis, thinking about dying and looking fabulous while doing it!   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. • Legends Podcast #659; Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)

    10/01/2024 Duration: 01h13min

Director Zach Snyder signed on to make a Star Wars movie back in 2012, shortly after the franchise was purchased by Disney. When that film never materialized, Snyder redeveloped the project for Netflix in the shape of Rebel Moon, a sci-fi epic about an evil empire determined to crush an uprising on a distant colony. Part one of two-part opening debuted late last month, quickly becoming the top film on the streamer despite negative reviews. Part Two debuts in April with an R-rated director’s cut on the way. Snyder has stated plans for the IP to expand into other media, including games, comics, and animation. Now we’re heading to somewhere that might just be a galaxy far, far away for Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire!      For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. • Legends Podcast #658; Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

    04/01/2024 Duration: 01h06min

We’re kicking off 2024 with an absolute banger from last year: the long-awaited follow-up to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse! Where the first film introduced us to Miles, Gwen, Peter B., and taught us that anyone can wear the mask, the new film blows the dimensional barrier wide open and calls in the Spider Society, a league of extraordinary arachnids with the mission to protect the multiverse. With stunning visuals, an amazing soundtrack, and more… well, more everything than the first one, the film seems primed to score a repeat win for Best Animated Feature of the Year. But somehow audiences were disappointed that it only tells half the story.  Alright, people, let’s do this one last time!   Check out our Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse live commentary episode: https://legendspodcast.libsyn.com/legends-podcast-bonus-spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-commentary    For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. • Legends Podcast #655; The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

    06/12/2023 Duration: 01h09min

The final film in Peter Jackson’s adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings came to a conclusion twenty years ago this month. Following the success of the first two films, the question remained whether the third could meet the expectation - and the hype - in the days leading up to its release. Needless to say, the film was a hit on an epic scale, coming in as the top film of 2003 and the first film to cross the billion-dollar mark since Titanic. Aside from financial success, the film was hailed as one of the greatest cinematic achievements of all time, delivering a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy and earning praise on every level of production. At the 76th Academy Awards, the film took home an Oscar in all eleven categories for which it was nominated, including Best Picture. Only one film can wear the crown of greatest fantasy epic ever made - is it The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King?   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''

  • Legends Podcast #654; Chronovember: Interstellar (2014)

    29/11/2023 Duration: 01h17s

Christopher Nolan loves playing with time in his films like Memento, Inception, and Tenet and telling stories about the push and pull between family and duty. For his follow-up to The Dark Knight Rises, Nolan plays with both big ideas in a story about a future where mankind’s only hope rests among the stars, and a father who must leave his children behind to venture to a new galaxy. Starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Matt Damon, and Michael Caine, this 2014 film was a runaway success and the tenth-highest grossing film of the year. The film also garnered praise from astronomers for its scientific accuracy and portrayal of theoretical astrophysics. Now we’re taking to the stars for our final trip this Chronovember with a film that’s truly Interstellar!   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. • Legends Podcast #653; Chronovember: Doctor Who - The TV Movie (1996)

    22/11/2023 Duration: 01h02min

Doctor Who first hit the airwaves in 1963 - sixty years ago! - but the TARDIS went dark in 1989 for an indefinite hiatus. In the mid-1990s, plans started brew to import the iconic British sci-fi series across the pond to America. The BBC partnered with the Fox network to produce a TV movie, which, if it performed well, could serve as the backdoor pilot for a revived series. English actor Paul McGann took over the TARDIS console as the Eighth Doctor after Sylvester McCoy’s Seventh Doctor was *checks notes* brutally gunned down by a machine-gun wielding street gang on prime-time television. Co-starring American actress Daphne Ashbrook as the doctor who tries to save him (see what I did there?) with Eric Roberts hot on their heels as The Master. Unfortunately, the special presentation was not a success, and the good Doctor remained in exile until regenerating in 2005 as Christopher Eccleston. But this is Chronovember, so we're whipping out our sonic screwdrivers and partying like it's 1999!   For more geeky podc

  • Legends Podcast #652; Chronovember: The Flash (2023)

    15/11/2023 Duration: 01h04min

After lengthy delays due to director turnover, the pandemic, studio shake-ups, and behind-the-scenes drama featuring its lead actor, DC Comics’ Scarlet Speedster finally raced onto movie screens this past summer. Director Andy Muscetti helmed the pic, staring Ezra Miller as a Barry Allen who goes back in time to meet another Barry Allen, Sasha Calle as Supergirl, Ben Affleck as Batman and also bringing Michael Keaton back as Batman. Despite bringing back your Dad’s Batman and boasting a multiverse of meta-references, the film failed to find success in the Father’s Day frame and fizzled out, making less than its production budget at the domestic box office. This all but sealed the fate of the DCEU, with James Gunn taking the reins. But don’t despair! We’re reuniting the crew from Crimson Comet with Haley, Rum Daddy, and Jonolobster joining to talk about The Flash one last time. Run, Barry, run!   Listen to Season 1 of Crimson Comet here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-lZqaarwxc&list=PLuu_KzvBvonC2l-JZV

  • Legends Podcast #651; Chronovember: Army of Darkness (1992)

    08/11/2023 Duration: 51min

We’re not ready to leave Halloween behind, so we’re kicking off the month with a comedy-horror classic courtesy of Sam Raimi. After spending not one but two sylvan getaways battling Deadites courtesy of the Necronomicon Ex Mortis (in The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn), S-Mart employee Ash Williams takes the ultimate unplugged vacation all the way back to the year 1300 in Medieval England. Up against time with an army of Deadites storming the castle, Ash must overcome the lack of technology and his own evil twin to get back to the future. Starring Bruce Campbell, the film was neither a commercial nor critical success, but has gone on to join the first two films as cult favorites. Now we’re swallowing the juice, saying the magic words, and taking our chainsaw hands to Army of Darkness!   Donate to the Entertainment Community Fund here:https://entertainmentcommunity.org/      For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. • Legends Podcast #650; The Village (2004)

    31/10/2023 Duration: 56min

Legends of Halloween draws to a close with a classic from the master of twists, M. Night Shyamalan himself! An isolated 19th century village is surrounded by mysterious woods filled with threatening creatures, but when a terrible crime is committed, a young woman uncovers the village's dark secret. Starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix, Adrien Brody, William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver, and Brendan Gleeson, Shymalan’s third film since his breakout hit The Sixth Sense was a box office success but disappointed critics, with Roger Ebert placing it on his "Most Hated" list. Yet with a haunting score from James Newton Howard, featuring violinist Hilary Hahn, and cinematography by Roger Deakins, there's plenty to speak of. Except for Those We Don't Speak Of. Legends Podcast is getting a jumpstart on the spookiest season with the latest installment in the Ghostbusters franchise! Jason Reitman sits in the director’s chair in place of his father, Ivan, who helmed the first two. Trading New York City for small-town Oklahoma and introducing a new generation of ‘busters including McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Logan Kim, and Celeste O'Connor, the film also stars Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd as the grownups and features cameos from the original cast. Released in 2021, the film scared up over $200 million at the box office and earned a sequel set for release next year. • Legends Podcast #644; The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

    20/09/2023 Duration: 46min

We’re blowing into the cartridge and pressing start on the second-biggest movie of 2023 to date! Based on several long-running video games series from Nintendo, this animated movie brings together the voice talents of Chris Pratt and Charlie Day the titular brothers, with Anya-Taylor Joy as the princess, Seth Rogan and Keegan-Michael Key as their allies, and Jack Black as the bad guy. Produced by Illumination, the studio behind the Despicable Me and Minions movies, the film super-smashed box office records to become the highest-grossing video game movie and the third highest-grossing animated movie of all time. While audiences clearly felt the Nintendo Power, critics were largely underwhelmed, citing the film as yet another rote exercise in brand expansion. Now your very own Super Podcast Bros. 14/09/2023 Duration: 51min

Rian Johnson’s 2019 mystery-comedy Knives Out carved out $311 million at the box office on a budget of $40 million, making it the second-highest-grossing original movie of the year not based on existing IP. The sequel rights set off a bidding war between the top streamers, with Netflix beating Amazon and Apple with a $469 million offer. Released December 23rd, 2022, the follow-up saw the return of Daniel Craig’s Southern sleuth Benoit Blanc, with another all-star cast of characters populating the film’s Greek island setting. Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, and Dave Bautista round out the who’s who in this whodunnit, which received a very limited theatrical release. • Legends Podcast #642; Damnation Alley (1977)

    07/09/2023 Duration: 01h03min

We’re getting back to our regular programming with a special request from one of our listeners! Following our episode on The Road, listener Jeff shared his  recommendation for another post-apocalyptic movie. According to Jeff, “It's an old one, but it still checks out.” Released in 1977, the same year as Star Wars, and two years before Mad Max, this “road movie” see a small group of survivors of World War 3 attempt to drive across the desolate wasteland to where they hope more survivors are living, facing freakish mutated insects and other dangers along the way. Starring Jan-Michael Vincent, George Peppard, Paul Winfield, and very young Jackie Earle Haley, based on the novel by Roger Zelazny, and directed by George Smight, the movie was, to put it kindly, a flop, despite being released in the new “Sound 360” surround format. But it has earned a cult following in the years since, with Jeff among its devotees, thanks in part to the true star of the film: the wasteland-crawling armored RV called The Landmaster,
