One reviewer called it “the death of the superhero genre, the burning of the superhero genre to the ground and then the returning in the middle of the night to piss on the superhero genre’s ashes.” Gee, I wonder how he really felt! Marcel the Shell with Shoes On burst onto the internet stage in 2010 with a three minute YouTube video. In three short videos, the world fell in love with the tiny, soft-spoken, introspective mollusc as he showed us his everyday life in a human-sized home. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and voiced by actress Jenny Slate, Marcel’s adventures jumped to the big screen in 2021 with a feature length film. While audiences didn't exactly “shell”out the big bucks to see it, the movie was critically adored, earning a near-perfect 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Putting a new spin on the traditional coming-of-age teen movie, director Emma Seligman mashes up The Breakfast Club with Fight Club for an action-packed, surreal romp through high school. Starring Rachel Sennot and Ayo Edebiri as two lesbians who start a “self-defense” club to get girls, this 2023 film explores the life of the “untalented gays” at Rockbridge Falls High School as they deal with football players, crushes, and the murderous Huntington Golden Ferrets. Thirty years ago, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich launched a franchise with this blockbuster movie starring Kurt Russell and James Spader - though maybe not in the way they expected. When an Egyptologist decodes the symbols on an ancient artifact, the U.S. military opens a portal through the stars leading to another galaxy. In the span of five years from 1987 to 1991, he starred in megahits Dirty Dancing, Ghost, Point Break, and this 1989 movie about a bouncer hired to clean up a rowdy honkytonk. Co-starring Kelly Lynch, Sam Elliot, Ben Gazzara and Kevin Tighe, the film was an instant Eighties classic despite not lighting up the box office and earning mostly-negative reviews at time of release. Roger Ebert wrote, “This is not a good movie. We're on the road (house) again with the remake! Swapping the Kansas City suburbs for the Florida Keys, this Amazon MGM release - exclusively on the Prime Video streaming platform - trades Patrick Swayze for Jake Gyllenhaal as the man named Dalton who gets hired to clean up a rowdy bar. Produced once again by Joel Silver, this time around The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman is behind the camera, while Daniela Melchoir, Jessica Williams, Billy Magnussen, and Conor McGregor round out the cast. This 2022 film, from the directing duo known as Daniels - Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert - tells the story of a middle-age laundromat owner who taps into the multiverse in order to repair her relationships with her family. The mind-mending flick was Everywhere during awards season last year, taking home two Golden Globes, four Critics Choice awards, and a BAFTA. The film won almost Everything it was nominated for at the Oscars with seven wins, including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. And the pic swept the four major guild awards - DGA, PGA, SAG, and WGA - All at Once. The cinematic cultural phenomenon known only as Barbenheimer roller-bladed into theaters last summer with the force of an atomic explosion. The double-feature from those ingenues of cinema verite, Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan, promised to be the box office event of the summer, along with all the meme culture meets pop culture cachet that came with it. While both films performed well, the former won the battle, with the long-gestating film based on Mattel’s bestselling doll bringing in over a billion dollars at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023.
